Authors In April -

Celebrating 25 Years

of Magic with Books

Authors in April, Inc. is a community sponsored literary program which is held in the beautiful month of April, here in Rochester, Michigan. The community of Rochester for the last twenty five years has invited published Authors and Illustrators, to participate in this one of a kind program for children. The authors will give presentations to fifteen elementary schools, six middle schools both public and private and the Rochester Public Library.

As the children start back to school in the fall, teachers, parents, and volunteers from the community will be busy preparing for the upcoming springtime visit. In the months before the authors scheduled visit, the schools are a flurry of activity. The children will have read many books by their assigned authors who will be speaking to their grade level and created one of a kind paintings, drawings and art objects to be displayed in the Media Center during the authors presentations.

This years guest authors were Lisa Wheeler, Laurie Keller, Gary Schmidt and Christopher Paul Curtis. And I heard from the children, they had a great time listening to the authors presentations.

The 25Th Annual Benefit Dinner was held at Twin Lakes Gold Club with The Honorable Judge Lisa Asadoorian as Mistress of Ceremonies. Judge Asadoorian encouraged everyone of us in the audience; that we must teach our children to read early and to read often. Ms. Asadoorian also had us all laughing about her illustrious "published school story's with beautiful stick figures". During the evening presentations I quietly put pen to paper and put some sketching time in.

Laurie Keller

Laurie Keller is the author and illustrator of many fun filled childrens books. Ms. Kellers humerous and fanciful illustrated characters have won over the hearts of adults and children alike.

During Ms. Kellers whimsical presentation she shared with all the banquet attendees her love of inanimate objects and that images pop into her head.

Lisa Wheeler

Shared with the audience the "Ten things about Lisa". Lisa Wheeler an Author of many, many childrens books.

Christopher Paul Curtis

Christopher Paul Curtis who has won several awards for his writing, entertained us with his stories of working for an automotive plant and how his writing flourished during this time.

Christopher Paul Curtis was the visiting author for the Middle School grades. Mr. Curtis was truly an entertaining speaker and very generous too! During his presentation he asked three children from each grade level to answer questions that related to his story. If the children got his question correct he gave them a "bookmark" which was a twenty dollar bill. All the kids were so excited. He taught the kids a song from one of his books. And I've heard from my son, that a lot of kids have been singing that song around school this week.

You can visit his website and read more about his amazing journey on becoming a published writer.

Gary Schmidt

Gary Schmidt spoke with such eloquence and wisdom, and spoke to the question of the purpose of writing.
