Children's Day

Children's Day is a national holiday in Japan, and is held each year on May 5. Also known as The Boy's Festival, each family flies the Koinobori which honors the father and sons of the household. Children will eat special foods, make paper samurai helmets called a "Kabuto" and have lots of fun. Parents during this special holiday, will pray for the health, strength, and future of their children.

After reading a story about Childrens Day, images of colorful dancing koinobori flying in the air popped into my imagination. I found myself wanting to create my own koinobori (carp). It was after I had prepared all my materials and had created some carp that everthing on the art table just evolved into an illustration to commemorate the holiday. The above photo is just a wee bit of the overall illustration.
